Estrategia y Negocios, a well-recognized publication throughout the region’s business and economic world, published an Article which highlights the commitment by a group of leaders working for Central America’s development. Included are Juan José Gutiérrez Mayora, President Chairman of CMI Foods, and Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez, President Chairman of CMI Capital. The article underscores the way in which CMI, Corporación Multi Inversiones, has established itself as a leader in different markets and geographic areas. They have also expanded the REIR corporate values, their hallmark from the outset. This strategic approach has been key to the position that CMI, Corporación Multi Inversiones enjoys, with its contribution to the region’s economic progress.

Behind Pollo Campero’s international expansion

Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga leads the growth vision at CMI Foods, the CMI group that Pollo Campero belongs to. The restaurant chain that has gone international started out as a small, cafeteria-type fried chicken chain back in the 70s. At 23 years of age, Juan José Gutiérrez took the business’ leadership and, 11 years later, began to see growth, opening up to 10 new restaurants per year in Guatemala and in El Salvador.

At present, Pollo Campero is the largest Latin-origin restaurant chain in the world, with operations in 8 countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Ecuador, Italy, Spain, and a history of over 20 years in the United States where the goal is to reach 100 restaurants in 2023.

Part of CMI Food’s strategy, Pollo Campero brand’s growth in the United States, is one of the top challenges for coming years. The goal is to duplicate the number of restaurants to 200 in the U.S. by 2025.

With a vision of the future marked by innovation, quality and sustainability, Juan José Gutiérrez has established an exceptional leadership that has taken him to head very important organizations. Between 1990 and 1995 he led Guatemala’s Chamber of Industry, the Central American Federation of Industry Chambers and the Federation of Central American and Caribbean Private Sector Associations.

Portada revista NewsWeek

After Pollo Campero’s growth, Newsweek USA portrayed him in the cover of its June 2005 edition as one of the Super CEOs of the moment. He is CMI Food’s President Chairman since 2018 and has contributed his leadership and strategic knowledge there to continue to promote the corporation’s presence.

46 years of service, innovation and growth

In 1977 Pollo Campero was considered a mature business, but in the eyes of Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga, much growth and innovation were still needed. Today, we can see the outcomes of that vision in a brand that continues to grow in markets as challenging as the U.S.

Estrategia y Negocios’ article portrays Juan José Gutiérrez as one of the businessmen and leaders building the region, and displays the intense work done by CMI, Corporación Multi Inversiones, through its business groups, CMI Capital and CMI Foods, to become a true benchmark in the continent.
